jessica + joe | maysville engagement session |

Apr 30 | Engagements
|

| Jessica is a hotshot lawyer in Chicago. Joe is an engineer (works on diesel engines, how cool is that?) from the small town of Maysville. This week, the three of us got together in Maysville for their engagement session. The only other time in my life that I'd been to Maysville was when I was driving through to Vanceburg, Kentucky for one of the most memorable weddings of my career. (I'll never forget it Lori!) I wish I had some images from the wedding but it was back in 2004, pre-blog. It was a great wedding... ceremony in front of an abandoned church, four wheelers, tent reception in the front yard, batman wedding cake, goats for the kids to play with... yes you read that right. A riot for sure! Anyway, Joe showed me around Maysville. It's a cozy little city. Bridges, flood walls and murals of famous folks like George Clooney's mom, Rosemary, who was quite famous in her day. Good times. Here are some of my favorite images from their session. |

james + jenny | louisville engagement session |

This next engagement session has just about the coolest engagement story ever. A few weeks ago, a friend of mine called to tell me that he got engaged. Of course I was ecstatic for him and I asked him how it all went down. He proceeded to tell me the most romantic thing I've ever heard. A night involving a special dinner, a song that he played and sang for Jenny on the piano and a surprise party with a bunch of friends and family. The best part was how he gave her the ring. They had been writing letters back and forth in a journal through the course of their relationship and it was James turn to write in it and give it back to Jenny. So that night, he pulled the journal out from behind his back (where it had been squeezed between his back and his belt) and handed it to her. She opened it up to read his letter and there was the ring in the pages meticulously cut out to fit the size of the ring exactly a la "Shawshank Redemption". (If you haven't seen the movie, get it... now. My favorite movie of all time.) She saw the ring, he declared his love for her and she said yes. Seriously, has a more romantic proposal ever occurred?
It was just my luck that they had the journal with them when we shot their engagement session. |

holly + clifton | lexington wedding at griffin gate |

Apr 27 | Weddings
|

Before Saturday, I had been majorly jonesing to shoot a wedding for what seemed like forever. My last wedding was way back in January, which in wedding photographer years is like 5000 years ago. Holly and Cliff's wedding marks the beginning of my wedding season. I looked at my calendar and I've got at least one wedding every weekend this year through Halloween. Y'all better be ready, because over the next six months, I am going to BRING IT. I am so stoked for this year's weddings, I feel like Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson at the beginning of "Wedding Crashers".
Holly and Cliff's wedding was a PERFECT way to start my season. They oozed awesomeness all day long. With Melody, their stellar wedding coordinator, Holly laid out the perfect simple/elegant/green wedding. And Cliff was cool enough to make me try a piece of the groom's cake. It was Bailey's Chocolate in the shape of a golf ball on a green and the flavor was so tasty! Not only that but they had a hilarious wedding party (you know who you are.) and a great day to get married. Sunny, 80 degrees, blue skies... does it get any better? I don't think so. Okay, maybe 70 degrees would have made it a little better. I hope you enjoy the delicious documentary goodness from Holly and Clifton's Lexington wedding.
Ceremony: Central Christian Church
Reception: Bluegrass Pavilion at the Marriott Griffin Gate
Wedding Coordinator/Florist/All-Star: Melody Walker Rodgers (So sweet, thoughtful and great at what she does!)

| Love the story that the shadows tell. |

| Every wedding needs a Zack. While the guys were walking over to the bar, Zack literally stops this girl in the middle of the road and asks if he can get a picture. |

| Occasionally, I'll stick my camera out the window while I'm driving and take a picture of the bride and groom on the way to the reception. Especially when they're riding in a white vintage Bentley. |

| Proof that the best man's speech was "wipe the tears from your eyes" funny. |

| "If you so much as put an ounce of frosting on my face..." |

| I love the dude who is sitting in the chair. And the guy who's holding the other guy's arm up. |

| You know you make me wanna... |

| My favorite frame of the reception. Holly and her dad. |

25 crazy fun ideas to spice up your wedding |

Apr 24 | Weddings
|

As a wedding photographer, I've seen some really crazy fun things happen at weddings. I've also had the chance to think of some things I think would be huge hits at weddings. You may think these ideas are crazy (and no doubt some of them are) but if you're looking to spice up your wedding day with a little hot sauce, this list is for you. Some of these ideas are more doable than others, but here's a small list to get your brains churning. People want to be involved in remarkable things, so make your wedding remarkable by throwing a little surprise into the mix.
1) A trampoline at the reception. Seriously, how much fun would that be?
2) Bright leather furniture placed around an outdoor cocktail hour or reception.
3) Groomsman playing football or soccer... it's your wedding day, have fun.
4) Best man speech involving funny gifts for the groom/bride.
5) Sushi bar.
6) Carnival games.
7) Cigars.
8) Cornhole, bocce or other lawn games.
9) A surprise choreographed first dance.
10) Dogs or other fun animals involved in the ceremony. Talk about making things interesting!
11) A themed wedding (wear all white, black tie, 20’s, 70’s)
12) A game that the bride and groom play in front of everybody.
13) Ice cream bar with all kinds of fun toppings... who doesn't love sprinkles on ice cream?
14) Costumes, masks, hats, boas for the dance party (like the Colombian La Hora Loca).
15) Bonfire and s’mores.
16) Different getaway transportation. How about a cool bike or a Vespa scooter?
17) Cash money strapped to the garter so single guys would actually go for it.
18) Pogo sticks... seriously, a bunch of groomsmen trying to pogo stick? Hilarious.
19) A bride and groom getting ready together.
20) Fun non-alcoholic drinks like izze and dogs and suds root beer.
21) Finding a swimming pool and jumping in it... skinny dipping anybody?
22) A pig roast.
23) A pre-wedding poker tournament.
24) A square dance.
25) Camping out after the reception. BYOSB (bring your own sleeping bag.)

karla + mike | columbus engagement session |

So I've got to confess something right off the bat. I've got a total crush on this next couple. I figure I'd just get that out of the way since it will be blatantly obvious by the time you scroll down and see all of the photos I'm posting from their engagement session. They are so warm and so beautiful that I just fell in love with them right away. I hadn't met either one of them until the session but I knew who Karla was because she was at Allison & Michael's Cincinnati wedding last May. (Another couple I was totally ga-ga over.) In fact, she's in the slide show if you look closely enough. (It's at the 1:44 mark... Karla doesn't love her expression in the photo, but I think it tells such a great story. Like, "Oh my gosh Allison, this is the most incredible wedding and it couldn't have happened to a more beautiful person... I love you so much." Seriously, that's what her expression says.) Then there is Mike. Turns out he's this rocking cool guy that has a tattoo and a Harley and, oh yeah, he's a killer graphic designer at the Farm Barn Art Co... designs for Dave Matthews Band and the like. Not just that, but he was kind enough to give me a series awesome DMB concert posters that he designed. I mean, how cool is that?
While I was heading from Chicago to Columbus for this session, I drove through rain for what seemed like the entire time. I was sure that the rain would force us to shoot inside or at least alter our plans. We didn't feel a drop. Instead, we got the softest, smoothest light I could have imagined for the shoot. Anyway, this was the last session of my whirlwind trip through Cincinnati, Chicago and Columbus. 1200 miles in three days. That's a lot of time in the car, but I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. |
